“Ringing guitars and perfect pop rhythms that will bounce around in your head for days." ~Powerpopaholic “Cartographer lies in the DMZ between baroque balladry and adrenal power pop. Luscious arrangements and soulful vocals make this pure ear candy.” ~The Lightning Round “Gagner has mapped out a fine debut here. First quality release of 2008.” ~Absolute PowerpopCartographer is largely the vehicle of singer-songwriter Scott Gagner, whose undeniable gift for melody is apparent within crunchy powerpop nuggets and acoustic folk-rock alike. Originally from Minnesota, Gagner began his career as a drummer for several bands in San Francisco. When his housemates began complaining about the noisy rehearsals, he traded in his drums for an acoustic guitar and began writing songs. A rabid interest in home recording quickly developed, and he began capturing his tunes on a 4-Track Cassette Recorder in his bedroom. Several years and several hundred songs later, he took the best tracks to a studio deep in the redwoods of northern California, recruiting the ace rhythm section of John-Paul McLean (Rainmaker) and Cary LaScala (Foo Fighters’ spin-off band Jackson United) on bass and drums, respectively. He then finished the overdubs at home, adding rich layers of piano, glockenspiel, mellotron, Moog synthesizer, and of course, hand claps. The result is the lush eponymous debut, Cartographer. Cartographer was voted Top 10 of 2008 on Absolute Powerpop. In May 2009, the song Love Triangle For Two was chosen as part of The Bay Bridged Monthly Mix podcast, joining the ranks of John Vanderslice, Rogue Wave, and other amazing bay area bands. The EP is available via iTunes, CDBaby, Amazon, and all other major MP3 download sites. In 2008, Gagner recruited three friends to bring the songs to life in a live setting; brothers Parker and Tyler Moore on guitar and drums respectively, and Rob Mills on bass. They've since played all over San Francisco, at The Red Devil Lounge, Amnesia, The Rockit Room, The House of Shields, and The Knockout SF. Cartographer is currently hard at work writing and recording their first full-length LP. Stay tuned.
